GENERAL QUESTIONS

Do you sew to order?

We don’t sew single items to order. However, if you need a small batch with minor changes, please contact us and we will consider possibility of this order.

What is ‘smart ultralight’?

This is our approach to gear design. We reduce weight without making tough compromises on comfort. Our gear is lighter than traditional equipment, retains essential functionality, but more durable than most ultralight solutions.

SLEEPING SYSTEM

What is a sleeping system?

This is everything that is responsible for a comfortable sleep on a hike: sleeping bag or quilt, mat, pillow, liner, accessories or special sleeping clothes.

Why am I cold in my sleeping bag or quilt?

There are many reasons for this. These are the most common ones:

  • wind, altitude, humidity or an open sleeping area
  • wrong temperature rating
  • cold mat
  • incorrectly fixed quilt
  • insulation is stuck together – it should be fluffed up
  • calorie deficit or dehydration
  • wet clothes or equipment
  • breathing inside sleeping system, thus moistening it
  • wrong size of sleeping bag
  • sleeping bag/quilt is heavily soiled and warms less
How to choose the temperature rating of sleeping bag/quilt?

You should focus on night temperature forecast and these two indicators:

  • Comfort – the comfortable temperature for an average woman;
  • Limit – the temperature at which an average man can stay warm in a curled-up position without feeling cold.

If you tend to feel colder than others, choose a sleeping bag that is 5-7°C warmer than forecast says.

We do not indicate the temperature ‘Extreme’ because it is the limit of survival, not comfort. We do not recommend taking it into account.

How important is sleeping mat?

It is extremely important. It is responsible for at least half of the warmth and comfort during sleep. Down shrinks under the body and no longer warms, so it is the mat that insulates you from the cold ground.

Inflatable and self-inflating mats also smooth out bumps and improve sleep quality.

To choose the right mat, you should pay attention to the main indicator – R Value:

6 R and more – suitable for -15 °C and lower

1 R – suitable for +10 °C and above

2 R – suitable for +5 °C and above

3 R – suitable for 0 °C and above

4 R – suitable down to -5 °C

5 R – suitable down to -10 °C

DOWN AND MATERIALS

What kind of down do you use in sleeping bags and quilts?

800, 870+ and 900+ Fill Power goose down from a Ukrainian supplier. Elasticity is confirmed by the IDFL laboratory in Switzerland.

Down treated with eco-friendly DWR, PFOS and PFOA free, bluesign certified, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GOTS 5.0, ECOCERT Greenlife, Screened Chemistry. We use ethically sourced down, but RDS certification is still in progress.

What fabric is used in sleeping bags and quilts?

We use calendered nylons with a ripstop weave – it’s durable, lightweight, breathable and hold down well. DWR coating provides basic protection against moisture.

The fabric does not contain fluorinated compounds (PFOS and PFOA), and the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate confirms its safety for health.

What are the zippers in ROCK FRONT sleeping bags?

We use zippers from the world leader in the hardware market, the Japanese brand YKK.

SLEEPING BAGS

How to choose the size of ROCK FRONT sleeping bag?

Measure your shoulder and hip circumference and your height. Then use the size calculator or the table on the product page.

What should I do if my parameters are on the borderline between sizes?

If you’re 176 cm tall, either M Medium or L Short will fit. If you’re 177 cm or taller, consider M Long or L Medium.

If your width measurements are close to the limit (within 1–4 cm) and you want more space — or if you plan to sleep in a puffy jacket — choose the wider size. For example, with a shoulder circumference of 126 cm, it’s better to go with one of the L options.

A sleeping bag that’s too spacious insulates poorly, while one that’s too tight restricts movement. The right fit gently hugs your body without squeezing. Our size chart and calculator take this into account.

How to zip two ROCK FRONT sleeping bags together?

Most models have a long central split zip. To connect two sleeping bags, unzip fully both, place them lining to lining and zip them together. You can also zip together sleeping bags of different sizes.

Pay attention to the zipper type and size:

Basic – YKK 5 with two sliders, connectable only with other Basic sleeping bags.

Ultralight – YKK 3 with two sliders, only connectable with Ultralight

Sleeping bags-blankets – YKK 3 with one slider, connectable with other blankets or sheets

How to make a quilt out of a sleeping bag?

To do this, you will need the Quilt Set attachment (or upgraded version). It allows you to attach the sleeping bag to the mat as a quilt, adjust the internal volume and prevent side blowing.

Make sure that there are special loops in your sleeping bag for this use. This information can be found in the product description.

How to turn my sleeping bag in an underquilt for a hammock?

Open the sleeping bag into a blanket and hang it under the hammock with the Underquilt Set (or upraded version). This is sold separately.

Before using the sleeping bag, make sure that there are loops for attachment. This is indicated in the product description.

What does the sleeping bag come with?

All ROCK FRONT sleeping bags are supplied with a compression bag. 350 Summer and 150 Cube UL models have a non-compression sack. All down sleeping bags are also supplied with a net for long-term storage.

Is the down filling even? Does the sleeping bag fit side-sleepers?

Yes, the insulation in sleeping bags is evenly distributed – 50/50 between the back and chest. If you sleep on your side, the sleeping bag will work. Just remember that after turning the down over, it takes time to restore its volume. It may feel a little chilly in the first few minutes.

QUILTS

What is the difference between a quilt and a sleeping bag?

Quilt is a sleeping bag without insulation on the back and without  hood. It is attached to your mat. This solution reduces weight, because the insulation under you still compresses and does not warm you. Warmth is provided by down blanket on top and the mat on the bottom.

Quilt is also more comfortable for those who often turn over in their sleep. It is easier to ventilate and regulate the temperature inside.

With a sheet or classic: which quilt to choose?

We have two lines of quilts that differ in design:

Classic quilt is attached to the mat with fastex and elastic bands. It is a simple and lightweight option that allows for an adjustable fit.

Quilt with a sheet consists of a down duvet and a separate sheet connected by a zip. This system is similar to a bed and provides more comfort. The zip secures the blanket, so there is no side blowing, even during active sleep.

What is the difference between the classic Base and Asketic quilts?

Base is a versatile quilt with a knee-length zip. They can be used as a blanket, quilt or underquilt for a hammock.

Asketic quilts are minimalist designs with a sewn footbox. They have no unnecessary features — built for those who value warmth and minimal weight. A special underbody cinch helps retain heat more effectively.

How to choose the size of a classic quilt?

Measure your height and check the table. ROCK FRONT quilts are available in three sizes:

L Long – fits up to 200 cm tall

M Medium – fits up to 176 cm tall

M Long – fits up to 188 cm tall

How is the classic quilt attached?

Three elastic bands with fastexes are included. Place them on the mat: one at neck level and the other two at approximately 50 cm intervals. Then place the quilt on top and connect the fastexes. Pull the quilt between the straps to reduce side blowing.

How to choose the size of a quilt with a sheet?

Please consider the size of your mat and your height.

Large fits mats from 190×60×4 cm to 200×65×10 cm and heights up to 190 cm

Regular fits mats from 180×51×4 cm to 185×65×10 cm and heights up to 176 cm

How is the quilt with sheet attached?

Please consider the size of your mat and your height.

First, place the sheet on the mat, tighten the drawstrings and fasten the fastex at the back. Then fasten the duvet to the sheet from the bottom up. The zips are colour-coded for easy reference: blue to blue, yellow to yellow. Add a pillow to the pillowcase and secure it with a drawstring.

Do all mats fit quilts?

Inflatable and self-inflating mats work best with classic quilts. Foam pads can also be used, but it’s harder to dial in the setup, and side blowing is more likely.

For quilts with a sheet, we recommend using only inflatable or self-inflating mats.

Will I get cold without a hood?

If the temperature at night is below 20 °C, it is better to use a (fleece) hoodie, buff, hat, down hood or balaclava. It’s not only warmer, but it’s also more comfortable, as the hood won’t twist, even if you roll over frequently in the quilt.

How to make an underquilt out of a quilt for a hammock?

Base and sheet models can be used as an underquilt. To do this, unfold the quilt into a blanket and hang it under the hammock using the Underquilt Set. This is sold separately.

Before using the quilt, make sure if there are loops for attachment. This information can be found in the product description.

What’s included with the quilt?

All ROCK FRONT quilts come with a compression sack and storage net. The classic Base and Asketic quilts are also supplied with a set of mat fixings. Quilts with a sheet are supplied with a sheet.

TECHNOLOGIES

What’s the difference between warm baffles and sewn-through seams?

Sewn-through seams are the outer and inner fabrics which are stitched directly together with no internal divider. There’s no insulation at the stitch lines, which creates cold spots. This construction is lighter and simpler, making it suitable for summer quilts.

Warm baffles have internal walls between the fabrics, forming separate down chambers. This prevents heat loss through the seams and ensures even insulation distribution. The construction is more complex but essential for 3-season and winter quilts.

What is 3D technology (differential cut)?

This means that the outer layer of fabric is larger than the inner layer. This prevents the insulation from being compressed from the inside, even when you put pressure on the sleeping bag with your body. This is important for warm winter models and underquilts, where heat is retained even when there is a lot of tension on the back.

The 3D cut can be used both in models with warm baffles (e.g. 800 3D and 1000 3D sleeping bags) and with sewn-through seams (e.g. 200 Pro quilt).

USE AND CARE

How to prepare a down sleeping bag or quilt for use?

Take it out of the compression bag 15-20 minutes before bedtime and shake it lightly to fluff it up evenly. If it is chilly outside, it may feel a little cool in the first few minutes – this is normal. The sleeping bag and mat will gradually warm up from your body heat.

Can I cover my head and breathe inside a sleeping bag or quilt?

We do not recommend doing this. Moisture from breathing accumulates inside and reduces thermal insulation. If cold air hits your face, it is better to use a hat, buff, hood, fleece mask or balaclava. For sub-zero temperatures, we have a down hood with a breathing tube – the Snorkel Balaclava.

The down in the bottom of the sleeping bag has disappeared. How to fix it?

The down may have become dislodged or lumpy after prolonged use. Try shaking the sleeping bag gently from both sides and spreading the down into the cells with your hands. If this does not help, wash and properly dry the sleeping bag. This often restores the volume of the insulation. Read more in our care article.

The quilt or sleeping bag got damp from condensation. What should I do?

Condensation is normal when camping. Moisture from your body or from the air can settle on the surface or inside the sleeping bag.

Take time during the warm part of the day to dry your sleeping bag. This will help keep it warm the next night.

To minimize condensation effects, consider using an outer thermal layer — often called a condensation cover. More details in the article.

How to wash a down sleeping bag or quilt?

Machine wash with a special down detergent. Before doing so, be sure to read the instructions on the tag. Use a tumble dryer for high-quality drying. Read more about washing and drying in our blog post.

How to wash a down sleeping bag or quilt?

Store unfolded or in the storage net provided. Avoid moisture, temperature extremes and do not place the sleeping bag in plastic bags.
